The most common length for this type of cut is 1-2 inches over the body, legs, tail, head, and ears. The reason it’s called the puppy cut is because this style leaves the dog’s coat soft and plush, just like a fluffy puppy! In a puppy cut, the hair is typically shorter than the breed standard for grooming, but the overall length can of course vary according to preference. You may also hear these cuts referred to as ‘kennel cuts’, since folks in kennels give them to very young puppies as this style is more manageable and easier to maintain. Not only is the puppy cut stylish and adorable, it also tends to make life easier for both human and pup. Not all dogs enjoy a nice grooming and shampoodle; one advantage of a puppy cut is that it makes the amount of groomings a puppy needs much less frequent.
